Barclay (1962-1977)

On 7 March 1962, Jacques Brel signed up with Eddie Barclay. This contract was extended a first time in 1967. The last renewal was signed on 3 March 1971, for a period of 33 years.

The same principle applied: Brel records LPs which are later released as singles. On one of them some first recordings are to be found: Les Bigotes, La Parlote, Quand maman reviendra, Les filles et les chiens re-recorded as LPs, with new arrangements.

Brel releases five LPs (25cm) and three LPs (30cm). Then another three 30cm ones: L'homme de la Mancha in 1968, "Peter and the Wolf" / "L'histoire de Babar" in 1969 and a re-recording in 1972 of old songs from the Philips era, but with new arrangements.

Two LPs (30cm), released in June 1966, bring together songs previously found on 25cm LPs. In January 1967, the Olympia recording is re-edited onto a 30cm LP. The additional songs are studio versions.

 Jacques Brel's song recital at the Olympia has been recorded on the 16th and the 17th of October 1964. Only 8 of the 15 songs have been cut on a record, the LP 25 cm 80.243.
The new edition on the LP 30 cm contains only 5 songs of this song recital: Amsterdam, Les timides, Le dernier repas, Les jardins du casino and Les toros. The other songs are have been recorded in studio.
This complete concert at the Olympia in 1964 will be released in "L'Intégrale".
Remark: the songs "Amsterdam", "Les jardins du casino" and "Les timides" have never been recorded in studio.

This record has been released a first time in December 1962. The four songs have been recorded a second time in April 1963 as those first recordings should not have been kept. This second edition has the same reference number. The song "Quand maman reviendra" will only be cut on a LP in 1985 (200.306). Those are the last recordings kept for "L'Intégrale".

Those 4 songs are Dutch adaptations of "Le plat pays", "Rosa", "Les bourgeois" and "Les paumés du petit matin". They will be cut on LP 30 cm in 1976 (ref. 93005) and then released in "L'Intégrale".

In March 1963, Jacques Brel records a symphonic poem "Les trois histoires de Jean de Bruges" as well as the song "Il neige sur Liège". These recordings appear on the record entitled "Jacques Brel chante la Belgique", ref. 33.B1. This 25cm LP which was never released to the public, was offered by the Union des Villes et Communes to the participants in the 15th Congress of the International Union of Local Authorities, in Brussels in 1963. The songs "Le plat pays" and "Bruxelles" complete the record.

"Les trois histoires de Jean de Bruges" have remained unreleased ever since. "Il neige sur Liège" was to be recorded on the record "Belgique vue du Ciel" (ref. Barclay 910.026) in 1976 before being included in the Complete Works.

In January 1964, Jacques Brel records "Les amants de coeur". It was a French version of the song "The Lovers" by the American Rod McKuen. The song was to be released for the first time in the Complete Works.

In October 1968 a single is released on the Bagatelle label B370.920 F with the film music from "La bande à Bonnot" composed by Jacques Brel and François Rauber.

In 1972, Barclay releases the single 61.567 with the music from "Franz", Jacques Brel's first feature film. The "Valse de Franz", composed with François Rauber is presented in the orchestral version. This recording was never put onto CD. It should be noted that on several of Barbara's live CDs, this music is played by her orchestra

Jacques Brel records "La Chanson de Van Horst", written for the score of the film "La Bar de la Fourche". This song remained unrecorded until being included in the Complete Works.

Jacques Brel writes the song "L'enfance" for his second film, "Le Far West". The song is recorded in 1973 as the single 61.789. It is also included in the Complete Works.

For his last appearance as an actor in "L'Emmerdeur", Jacques Brel co-wrote the music with François Rauber. A single is recorded on the RCA label SAG 41.132. A re-release on CD took place in 1997 on the Play Time label 302.599.

In 1974 Jacques Brel takes part in the film "Jacques Brel is alive and well and living in Paris", adapted from the American musical. He sings "Ne me quitte pas", re-recorded for the occasion. The song appears on the Atlantic concert record SD2.1000.
